Kabul, 13 March 2014 (ENNA)-An aggressive assault has been carried out on Mr. Mukhtar Warafayee, AACN representative for Northern Afghanistan, on the evening of 10th March, 2014 in Mazar-e-Sharif city. Mr. Warfayee was attacked and beaten by a group of armed individuals, linked with corrupt officials and mafia. He was severely injured and is in serious condition.

Mr. Wafayee was repeatedly threatened for his disclosures and writings against corruption and corrupt officials in Northern Afghanistan. But this young journalist continued his activities without any fear. His contributions were always highly appreciated by the Afghan Anti-Corruption Network and Anti-Corruption Watch Organization. Both organizations are very concerned about this aggressive act and are condemning it in the strongest possible terms.  They urge the authorities of the Balkh province, including the police, to seriously investigate this crime and to punish the perpetrators according to the laws.

This attack shows once more that social activists and journalists are outlawed in Afghan society. They are facing threats and are in real danger. The AACN is confident though that such attacks will nevere stop anti-corruption activists to keep fighting against corruption.

AACN : Afghan Anti-Corruption Network is the first and largest volunteer, social, non-profit, non-political and non-governmental organization and activists’ network, which has been established in the light of article 35 of the Constitution of Afghanistan. It aims to promote transparency, support the rule of law, coordinate and strengthen civil society in order to fight against corruption and for having a corruption-free state.
