On May 8th President Ashraf Ghani and EU Ambassador to Afghanistan Franz-Michael Mellbin hosted an anti-corruption conference in Kabul. This marked the end of the EU’s 2017 anti-corruption campaign launched in March. The focus of the campaign has been anti-corruption in the justice sector, security sector as well as in the mining industry. UNAMA stresses the importance of continuing the fight against corruption in a recently released report. The report highlights that Afghanistan has made progress with many legal and policy reforms on anti-corruption, but these have yet to impact the daily lives of the Afghan people.
Anti-corruption was also one of the points raised by ENNA at the
meeting with DEVCO/EEAS on April 26th, to discuss the new EU Strategy for Afghanistan currently being drafted.
